Mount Dikeos: the highest peak on Kos Island

Mount Dikeos, also known as Dikaios, is the highest peak on Kos Island, Greece, standing at 846 meters above sea level. This prominent mountain offers hikers a rewarding experience with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, neighboring islands like Kalymnos and Nisyros, and the Turkish coastline.

Starting Point: Zia Village

The most popular route to the summit begins in the picturesque village of Zia, located approximately 15 kilometers from Kos Town. Zia is renowned for its traditional architecture, vibrant markets, and stunning sunset views. Ample parking is available near the village, making it a convenient starting point for the hike.

The Hiking Trail

The trail from Zia to Mount Dikeos is well-marked and considered moderately challenging. The ascent covers an elevation gain of about 530 meters and typically takes between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, depending on fitness levels and pace.

The hike can be divided into four distinct sections:

1. Zia Village to Dirt Road (15 minutes): Begin by walking through Zia’s charming streets, passing by local shops and tavernas.

2. Dirt Road to Forest Path (35 minutes): Proceed along a dusty country road, where you’ll encounter rural scenery, including olive groves and grazing livestock.

3. Forest Path to Tree Line (40 minutes): Enter a dense forest of juniper trees, providing shade and a cooler environment.

4. Tree Line to Summit (20 minutes): The final stretch is more exposed and steeper, leading to the summit where the chapel of Christos Dikeos and a prominent cross await.

The trail is marked with signs in both Greek and English, and blue and red arrows guide hikers along the path. It’s advisable to wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry sufficient water, especially during the warmer months.

Summit Experience

Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views. On clear days, it’s possible to see as far as the islands of Pserimos, Plati, and Kalymnos, as well as the Turkish coast. The summit features a small chapel dedicated to Christ, which holds cultural significance for locals. Every year on August 6th, a religious celebration takes place here, with some participants choosing to camp overnight.

Practical Tips

* Best Time to Hike: Spring (May-June) and autumn (September-October) offer milder temperatures and clearer skies.

* Early Start: Begin your hike early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and ensure ample daylight.

* Safety: Be cautious of sudden weather changes, as the summit can be windy and prone to rapid cloud formation.

* Facilities: There are no facilities along the trail or at the summit, so plan accordingly.

Mount Dikeos offers a fulfilling hiking experience that combines natural beauty, cultural heritage, and panoramic vistas. Whether you are an avid hiker or a casual walker, this trek provides an unforgettable adventure on Kos Island.

Spend a little time on Kos and there’s one word you’ll start hearing again and again:

👉 Εντάξει — Endáxi

It can mean:

✓ Okay
✓ Alright
✓ Fine
✓ Agreed
✓ No problem

And Greeks use it… a lot. 😄

Someone asks if everything is okay?
Endáxi.

Your coffee will be ready in five minutes?
Endáxi.

Meeting your friends at the beach later?
Endáxi!

It’s one of those little words that makes Greek suddenly feel much easier.

🎧 Pronunciation: en-DAH-xi
🇬🇷 Greek: Εντάξει

Try saying it out loud:

En… DÁ… xi.

Next time you`re on Kos, listen for it. Once you know it, you`ll suddenly hear it everywhere. 👂🇬🇷

But there`s another tiny Greek word you`ll hear constantly when people meet, leave, toast… and sometimes even answer the phone.

🥂 That`s what we`re unlocking next.

From above, Mastichari shows exactly why we love the quieter side of Kos: a small harbour, whitewashed houses, fishing boats and the endless blue of the Aegean. 💙

⚓ Located on the north-west coast of Kos, Mastichari has kept much of its traditional seaside-village atmosphere. Wander along the waterfront, stop for fresh fish or a Greek coffee, and stay for one of those sunsets that make you forget about the time. 🌅

The port is also the departure point for ferries to nearby Kalymnos – perfect if you want to add a little island hopping to your Kos adventure. ⛴️

🏖️ CarpeDiem tip: Don’t just pass through Mastichari on your way to the ferry. Take some time to explore the village and enjoy its long sandy beach and relaxed waterfront.

Hi, I`m Laila, your local guide on Kos, and today I`m taking you to one of the island`s most fascinating hidden gems.

Nestled in the hills between the Asclepieion and Zia lies Haihoutes, a village that was slowly abandoned during the 1960s. Its stone houses now stand silently among olive trees, telling stories of a bygone era. In recent years, the heart of the village has come alive again thanks to a traditional Greek café and taverna, where you can enjoy homemade local dishes surrounded by history.

🎶 On many evenings, live Greek music fills the air, creating a magical atmosphere unlike anywhere else on Kos. Wander through the ruins, visit the small museum, and experience authentic island hospitality in a place where history and tradition meet.

If you`re looking for an experience beyond the beaches, Haihoutes is a place you`ll never forget.

Wander through sunlit terraces where Hippocrates once walked, where science met spirituality, and where the first whispers of the Hippocratic Oath took form.

It’s not just a ruin—it’s a reminder of how deeply healing is connected to nature, wisdom, and balance.

My tip? Go early in the morning to catch the golden light and feel the calm before the day begins.

Tucked away in the hills of Kos lies Haihoutes (Agios Dimitros), an abandoned village where nature and history quietly embrace. Cracked doorways, fig trees growing through roofs, faded icons in empty corners… it’s like time paused and left the soul behind.

But look closer: a restored kafeneio, the scent of mountain herbs, a smile from someone keeping the memory alive.

Laila’s Tip: Go just before sunset. The stones glow golden, and the whole village hums like a soft old song.
